Well, this was supposed to be the boring first blog — but since I write about talking cheese, there’s really no such thing as boring, is there? 🧀
At the start of this year, I decided to dive into the gooey world of self-publishing, just to prove to myself that I could do it. And I did! By the end of March, my very first book was out in the wild — crisp, fresh, and smelling faintly of cheddar success.
But once you start, it’s hard to stop. The second book followed soon after (though it’s currently going through what I like to call “a little maturing period” — also known as revisions).
Looking back, Book 1 was my big goal. I was so focused on getting it done that I may have rushed the process a bit — like cutting into cheese before it’s fully aged. So, I’ve gone back, refined the text (the grammar needed a quick polish), and reworked the images so they print beautifully.
I also switched printers — sorry, Amazon, but your colours weren’t quite grate. Now, the pages look sharper, and the artwork finally pops like it should.
Oh, and I bit the bullet and bought my own ISBNs — those official book numbers that make you feel like a “real author.” It wasn’t cheap, but it means my books can now travel far beyond Amazon. The world of cheese is officially going global! 🌍🧀
Along the way, I discovered that every printed book must be sent to the British Library — yes, by law! Apparently, this tradition started in 1662. So, somewhere deep in the archives of history, a librarian is filing away a story about a talking block of cheese. I like to imagine they paused for a moment and thought, “What on Earth…?”
It’s been a steep learning curve — or maybe a cheesy learning wedge — but I’ve loved every minute. Book 1 is nearly ready in its new, improved form, and Book 2 isn’t far behind. The fridge door has only just opened, and the adventure is just getting started!
🧀 Stay tuned for the next blog, where I reveal the cheesy chaos behind Book 2…
